About
John 8:32- "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
For aslong as the word Christian has existed it has been associated with, regardless of all other connotations those who recognised the historical figure Jesus Christ as a man who was infact the messiah prophesied about in the religion of the Jews ('For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. And the government will rest on his shoulders. These will be his royal titles: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.' Isaiah 9:6).
Christianity is a religion which makes many key historical claims which distinguishes it from many other world religions. It originated at a point in history close to 2000 years ago and is a religion which has evolved throughout history, as a result we have a great many different traditions who despite their different practices come together on several key understandings (the most common of these can be found in our doctrinal basis). As students then where do we fit into this? Those of us who are Christians before coming to university come from a wide range of backgrounds, traditions and cultures and for many in a world which is increasingly post-Christian. University then can be a hard time.
So our goals are thus..
- Fellowship, Community
- To question, enquire and understand how our personal faith responds to the world we live in today aswell as recognising and engaging with issues in our generation.
- Witness and Evangelism.
Evangelism is something intrinsically linked to the Christian religion and there are many different approaches to this but it's ultimate aim is to let the world and the people in any given time and place to hear the message Christ preached, this is integral in the Christian worldview as it relies on the fact that God 'can' be known through the life and teachings of Jesus who claimed to be the infinate metaphysical God given physical being. The Church, that is Jesus's followers are then instructed to carry on Jesus's teaching in the wake of Jesus's execution.
'One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: "Teacher, what must I do to recieve eternal life?" Jesus replied, "What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?" The man answered, "You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.' And, 'Love your neighbour as yourself.'"
"Right!" Jesus told him. "Do this and you will live!" (Luke 10:25-29)
Christianity also has what it calls eschatology which is a distinguishing belief about how things will end or more commonly known as a view on something like the Apocalypse. This rests in the view of a eternal judgement at the end of all things, it's unknown when this would happen even Jesus said he didn't know and so as people who believe in the authenticity of this are charged with in short letting as many people know as much about the idea and life & teachings of jesus and our understanding of the world.
